Derrick obtained an honours degree in Law at Manchester Metropolitan University (which he prefers to call the old Manchester Polytechnic) in 1982. After completing his Law Society Finals, he joined Russell & Russell in Farnworth in 1983 as a green Articled Clerk and completed his Articles in 1985 when he qualified as a Solicitor. He was almost immediately made an Associate Solicitor with Russell & Russell.

He initially practised in all areas of law, including personal injury, general litigation, matrimonial, conveyancing and probate. However he developed his litigation and contentious skills being ever the argumentative type and soon specialised in Accident and Injury claims acting on behalf of the injured and the afflicted.

Derrick is now a Senior Partner in Russell & Russell and has headed the Personal Injury Department for more years than he would care to remember. He has seen the Department achieve year on year growth in a competitive and dynamic market. Whilst managing the Department he is still a "coal face" worker and continues to run a large number of cases albeit that he is more involved in Accidents and Injuries in the workplace including Industrial Disease and repetitive strain injury cases and severe injury cases.

He has in recent years successfully concluded several head injury cases where the award of compensation has been above £1million. He also has dealt with a number of Fatal Accident cases and is on the Panel for SCARD (Support and Care after Road Death and Injury) a most worthwhile charity to which Russell & Russell regularly contribute. He has the knowledge and experience to offer guidance and assistance to those left to pick up the pieces after tragic and catastrophic accidents.

Away from the office Derrick enjoys to spend quality time with his wife Gill, and their two children Dylan and Joseph and his elder children, Anna, Andrew and Matthew. When time permits he plays golf at Turton Golf Club; he enjoys all sports, walking (especially with his border collie Bess), listening to music and reading.

His professional memberships include The Law Society Panel for Approved Personal Injury Solicitors, The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and the Motor Accident Solicitors Society (MASS).
